Pokémon GO Reverts Catch Info UI Update After Short Rollout

Pokémon GO has reverted a recent UI update that pulled Pokémon catch info to the very top of the Pokémon page, following a short rollout of the new UI over the past 48 hours. According to Niantic’s support page, the new Catch Info UI has been temporarily rolled back while the team works on improvements. No timeline has been given for when a revised version will return.

Background

The update, rolled out earlier this week, placed the catch location of Pokémon prominently at the top of the Catch Info screen. While intended to modernize the Pokémon details layout (which indeed it did), the change drew criticism for making sensitive information more visible during screenshots and livestreams.

3 new UI updates have gone live. The Pokemon catch location has been moved up, the ball layout has changed and the charged moves now show super effective/ not very effective in battle!

There were a few areas of criticism, aside from some early rendering bugs, which we agree with:

  • Impact on location privacy: Streamers warned the change increased the risk of “doxxing” by revealing identifiable information, but we think this is not limited to streamers. Sharing a screenshot of a Pokémon should not broadcast where that Pokémon was caught, as that is revealing potentially Personally Identifiable Information!
  • UI priorities: Catch location should not overshadow more important details such as Stardust, Candy, or attack information.
  • Lack of choice: There should be a toggle to give users more control over what information is displayed on this page, especially when sharing screenshots.

We look forward to seeing how this feature evolves and how it will look once it is available once again.
