Mimikyu PvP Battle Mechanic in Pokémon GO Explained
Greetings Trainers! Its an interesting time in the PvP scene with the new Trainers Battle System going live in Pokémon GO. With this update Mimikyu is now eligible in GBL, excluding the Competitors Cup. Mimikyu is unique in that it has a Battle-Only Form called the Busted Form. Once per battle, Mimikyu’s shroud protects it from a Charged Attack. Trainers may wonder how this system works, so let’s find out!

Mimikyu, the Disguise Pokémon, is a dual Ghost Fairy type Pokémon. Such a unique typing makes an interesting case as this allows Mimikyu to have triple resistance to Fighting, whist also having a double resistance to Normal, Bug and Dragon. This means it is only weak to Ghost and Steel type attacks, giving Mimikyu a very strong defensive profile.
Mimikyu Trainer Battle Mechanics
Mimikyu enters the PvP scene with a very unusual battle gimmick that makes it stand out from most Pokémon GO PvP picks. Its core mechanic revolves around two forms: Disguised Form at the start of battle, and Busted Form after its disguise is broken.
- At the start of a battle, Mimikyu enters in its Disguised Form, and this form behaves like it has a built-in shield for one incoming Charged Attack. If Mimikyu takes on a Charged Attack, without using a shield, in the disguised form, it takes no damage from that attack and then shifts into its Busted Form.
- One important detail is that if you spend your own shield while Mimikyu is still disguised, it stays in Disguised Form instead of being forced into Busted Form.
- Once Mimikyu’s disguise is broken, it enters Busted Form and takes an ongoing Defense drop for the rest of the battle. The form change and debuff remains until the end of battle, even if Mimikyu is switched out and later returned to the field.
- Mimikyu’s disguise works just as a regular shield. That means it takes 1HP damage from an opponent’s Charged Attack.
Mimikyu’s PvP battle mechanic in Pokémon GO is simple to understand but difficult to play around: it starts with a free shield, absorbing one Charged Attack through Disguise, then becomes permanently less durable after the disguise breaks. That makes it one of the most unique Pokémon in the game, because the opponent is not only battling Mimikyu’s stats and moves, but also its built-in timing puzzle, while also opening up a lot of scenarios for the Trainer using Mimikyu themselves.
