Mega Mewtwo, Zeraora, and Flamigo Assets Updated in Pokémon GO

A new wave of asset updates has been pushed to Pokémon GO, and it includes several high-profile Pokémon that immediately caught our attention. Most notably, updated assets for Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Mewtwo Y, Zeraora, and Flamigo have been added, alongside visual updates for a long list of existing Pokémon.

While asset pushes do not guarantee an imminent release, history shows that repeated updates often point to active preparation behind the scenes on Niantic’s/Scopely’s end.

💡 Disclaimer: As always, take this with a grain of salt! These news are based on datamining and public info shared on Reddit and Discord, not officially confirmed by Niantic. Datamined updates can change, be delayed or not released at all.

Major Asset Additions

Mega Mewtwo, Zeraora, and Flamigo Assets Updated in Pokémon GO

The following Pokémon had new or updated assets pushed in this latest update:

  • Mega Mewtwo X
  • Mega Mewtwo Y
  • Zeraora
  • Flamigo

Mega Mewtwo assets have technically appeared before, even as far back as two years ago, but there is little reason to push these assets again unless they are actively being prepared for release. Maybe this is the first time they have been intentionally updated, rather than being accidentally pushed?

After all, this is the year when we celebrate 10 years of Pokémon GO and 30 years of the Pokémon franchise. A GO Fest debut would make sense from a hype and scale perspective.

Is Zeraora the Next GO Fest Mythical?

Zeraora’s updates strongly hint that Zeraora could be the next Pokémon GO Fest Mythical, following the pattern set by previous GO Fest events. Obviously, Magearna would be the logical next Mythical, but this wouldn’t be the first time the devs decided to release Pokémon out of order.

Flamigo

    Flamigo

Flamigo’s addition is less mysterious, as it has already been datamined for a themed event next month, commonly referred to as “Carnival de Flamigo,” making its appearance here fully expected.

Notable Visual Tweaks and Fixes

In addition to the big Mega Mewtwo and Zeraora news, visual updates were applied to:

Notable fixes

Several smaller but interesting changes were spotted within the updated assets:

  • Tynamo and Dedenne are no longer stuck in mid-animation in their icons
    • Tynamo no longer glows permanently
    • Dedenne’s cheeks are no longer lit at all times
  • Shiny Tynamo was slightly repositioned
  • Pheromosa’s cape was made more translucent
  • Mega Mewtwo X and Y models were slightly upsized compared to their previous appearance
  • Mega Mewtwo X and Y now use their correct, separate cries
  • Mega Mewtwo portrait assets have still not been added

What This Likely Means

At minimum, this update confirms active internal work on Mega Mewtwo, Zeraora, and Flamigo. Flamigo’s release appears imminent. Zeraora looks probable to headline a major event later this year. Mega Mewtwo remains the biggest wildcard, but repeated, deliberate updates suggest it has not been shelved.

As always, nothing is official until Niantic announces it. Still, this is one of the strongest asset pushes we have seen in a while, and it is absolutely one to keep an eye on.

We will update this article as more information emerges.
